To paraphrase (very loosely!) Shakespeare: I have come to praise the World Wide Web, not bury it. Of course we all know that there are dangers on the Internet. I spend a good portion of class time trying to scare the students into using some common sense when going on the web. However, the Internet can be a tremendous source of inspiration for both teachers and students.
Read-Write Web, Web 2.0, Technology Integration! There are lots of terms for the way that computers are being used in education. You may have heard the term Web 2.0. Well, Web 1.0 was the first generation of the Internet. Everyone was a reader - they would go to a site and read it and there was no interactivity. Web 2.0, the second generation, refers to web pages that not only allow interaction by playing videos, filling out forms, and more, but also allow people to generate their own content through blogs (which are web logs or on-line diaries), wikis (collaborative websites) and other tools of the Internet. Sites such as Youtube and Flickr (a photo site) and Wikipedia all exist because of user content. We Read and we Write. Read-Write. And these are the technologies that our students are using today in their personal lives. We can grab their interest by bringing them into the classroom.
